Shoulder instability and shoulder dislocation rehabilitation and physiotherapy treatment in London (non surgical)

The shoulder joint may become loose and slide around in the socket making it unstable. If left untreated instability can lead to arthritis of the shoulder joint. In some cases the shoulder can completely slip out of the socket and become dislocated. These common conditions may occur following sudden injury or from chronic overuse of the joint.

If the shoulder instability or dislocation doesn’t require surgery our physiotherapist will develop a rehabilitation program based on the nature of your injury. At first, you will be advised what activities to avoid and shown positions that reduce the risk of further injury or dislocation of the shoulder.

A number of techniques and treatments will be used to reduce pain and inflammation. A variety of exercises will follow, improving the range of motion in your shoulder and strengthening the shoulder blade muscles and rotator cuff. These exercises will retrain the shoulder muscles to keep the head of the humerus in the socket and will improve stability and the movement of the shoulder joint, allowing you to gently return to your normal everyday lifestyle.

Shoulder instability and shoulder dislocation rehabilitation and physiotherapy treatment in London (post surgery)

In severe cases of injury or trauma to the shoulder joint, surgery may be necessary to repair torn or stretched ligaments in order to hold the shoulder joint in place. The most common method of surgery is using an arthroscope, an instrument that allows small incisions to be made and is minimally invasive.

The importance of rehabilitation and physiotherapy is even more profound after surgery; it is also more complicated and involves a longer period of time for full recovery. During the first few sessions our physiotherapist will initially use a number of treatments like massage, hands-on techniques and ice to treat the after effects of the surgery. The rehabilitation will gradually introduce stretching and strengthening exercises for the ligaments and surrounding muscle and will initially move from passive exercises to an active range of motion exercises improving your shoulder stability and strength. Our objective is to empower you to return to your normal activity of life safely and with confidence and to help you avoid any future complications.

Our physiotherapy and osteopathy treatments are covered by most health insurances and are Bupa registered & recognised (BUPA Global and BUPA UK), Axa registered & recognised (AXA International, AXA PPP), Cigna registered & recognised and WPA registered & recognised
