What are the symptoms of Jaw pain and TMJ disorders?

  • Pain in your temporo-mandibular joint or the side of your face
  • Pain when you chew or open your mouth wide
  • Neck or shoulder pain
  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Clicking or “popping” of the jaw
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Swelling

What is the temporo-mandibular join or TMJ?

Temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your upper and lower jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, just in front of each ear. It enables your jaw to move up and down and side to side in order to talk, drink and eat.

What are the origines of jaw pain and TMJ disorder

There is a large variety of what causes jaw pain and it is not always easy for someone who is not a specialist to find the real cause of jaw pain. It could be caused by clenching or grinding your teeth, by an injury, stress, malocclusion, bad posture, neck or back issue, shoulder problems or even feet position or any body unbalance.

How our osteopath in London works to relieve jaw pain?

Our London based osteopath will do a full assessment of your condition in order to identify the cause of your symptoms, and offer appropriate treatment. The osteopath will check your posture, your neck and spine and relation of your TMJ to your skull. He will also look for areas of stress and tension around your TMJ that might be causing the issues.

Once the assessment is completed, the osteopath will design a treatment plan for you, based on the causes and the severity of your pain. This will include gentle massage and stretching of the muscles of the jaw, in order to release any tension and reduce pain.  Apart from focusing on alleviating the pain, our osteopath will also work on correcting your posture and the joints of your neck and back in order to solve the cause of the problem and avoid pain in the future.
