Mal-a-la-machoire-c-est-graveTemporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your upper and lower jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, just in front of each ear. It enables your jaw to move up and down and side to side in order to talk, drink and eat. TMJ disorders can be caused by malocclusion (teeth don’t meet properly when the mouth is closed), by clenching or grinding your teeth, by injury or even stress.

If you are an Axa or Bupa patient, you cannot book online. Please call our office with your authorisation number.

If you cannot find an appointment which suits you or would like a home visit, call us or send us a message: we will do our best to find you a slot.

There are several symptoms of TMJ disorders, including:

  • Pain in your temporo-mandibular joint or the side of your face
  • Pain when you chew or open your mouth wide
  • Neck or shoulder pain
  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Clicking or “popping” of the jaw
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Swelling

If your symptoms are caused by malocclusion, you will need to consult your dentist, as you will likely need orthodontic treatment. For any other cause or TMJ disorders, osteopathy is a very effective treatment.

Our London based osteopath can offer you a full assessment of you condition during a home visit, in order to identify the cause of your symptoms, and offer appropriate treatment. The osteopath will check your posture, your neck and spine and relation of your TMJ to your skull. He will also look for areas of stress and tension around your TMJ that might be causing the issues.

Once assessment is completed, the osteopath will design a treatment plan for you, based on the causes and the severity of your pain. This will include gentle massage and stretching of the muscles of the jaw, in order to release any tension and reduce pain.  Apart from focusing on alleviating the pain, our osteopath will also work on correcting your posture and the joints of your neck and back in order to solve the cause of the problem and avoid pain in the future.

Excellence physiotherapy offers home visits in London, treating you in the comfort of your own home. If you prefer, we can also offer treatment at one of the two Light Centre practices, in Belgravia, near London Victoria station, or in the City of London, near Moorgate station.
